Yummie Honey from Polish Bees

We have six great flavours of pure, natural, unblended honey.  Each is gathered by hand using traditional methods from hives nestling in the lush open meadows and ancient forests of the Zulawy region of northern Poland.

The Wild flower and Acacia are available in both 340ge and 454ge jars.  The Lime Blossom, Honeydew, Buckwheat and Rape Flower are available in 340ge jars only.

The Benefits of Honey

Honey can also help promote better health.  It has antiseptic properties and is rich in vitamins and minerals.  It can be used to soothe sore throats, put on cuts and burns and in some cases, ease digestive problems.

Honey should not be given to infants under 12 months old or to anyone who may suffer from nut allergies.

How it Started

Our honey is from the Zulawy region in the north of Poland, about 100 miles to the east of Gdansk.  We were there on business and stopped for lunch at a roadside café near Elblag.  The owner surprised us by serving wild flower honey with a crumbly white cheese.  We were impressed. It turned out that he was an avid beekeeper.  He invited us to join him that evening to meet a group of beekeepers.  They were having a “tasting session”.

We arrived at 7.00pm at the local hotel and were introduced to the people there as “special visitors from Wales”.  With typical Polish hospitality and tremendous enthusiasm for their produce they insisted that we taste the different varieties they had on show.  “You must try all of these” they said, pointing to the many pots on display on the long table.  “They’re all pure, natural and unblended, from our own bees”, and added “Honey is very good for you”.

We tried the wild flower honey again.  Delicious.  We tried nearly all of them: the Acacia, the Lime Blossom, the Honeydew, the Buckwheat and the Rape Blossom, and some others that seemed to have no English translation.  They were all gorgeous.

A bit of technical stuff

The types of honey we offer are harvested at different times of the year.  They are extracted from the comb at room temperature and stored in a large tank before bottling and labeling.  All of this is done in Poland.

We can not say the honey is organic.  It is true that agriculture in this part of Poland is extensive (rather than intensive), meaning that the use of artificial fertilisers, and of pesticides, herbicides and insecticides, is almost non-existent.  GM crops are also highly unlikely.  But up to now there is no certifying authority in Poland, equivalent to the Soil Association in the UK, able to set standards and carry out inspections etc.

So we just say the honey is pure, natural and unblended, harvested by hand, using traditional methods, from hives nestling in the lush open meadows and ancient forests of the Zulawy region of northern Poland.

And it is yummie, however you eat it.
